Power to the Male & Female Race!

Ok, so I analysed some of the data that I have gathered from my survey at www.surveymonkey.com and I have noticed some people do think of Pole dancing as degrading and some feel that it should be considered as a Olympic sport. I respect people's thoughts as this project isn’t about what I think, it’s about how the public percieve Pole dancing.

After analysing the data I have however taken an interest in male’s taking part and performing Pole dancing too. I have a video of a Male and a Female Pole dancing and I have got a video that is 100% fitness and one that is fitness and performance.
I would really like to know what you all think in as much detail as possible what you think of both, your personal perceptions and if you would consider Pole dancing as an Olympic sport. I know your name will appear and I understand you may feel uncomfortable however you are not going to be judged I will find you extremely helpful and honest.

Please take time to watch the videos and comment, it will be appreciated so much.

Thanks Abbi :-)

  1. I was absolutely amazed watching these, especially the second one and I think it goes to show how strong these people are to hold their bodies in these various ways.
The first video shows all the different techniques and uses lots of different muscles which I think could help other areas of sport. It shows control, balance and flexibility, agility and more.
The second video in my opinion is much more entertaining and shows as much strength as the first, with speed and the performance aspect. However I see the second video as more of an art form than a sport.
The first video could be used towards another sport, just a different aspect of the training. On other hand it does have similarities to gymnastics, but gymnasts start young in their training. Would parents take their children to pole dancing classes as they would gymnastics? Still, it could be classified within gymnastics as a separate section. If it was, with the current perceptions of pole dancing they might apply a age limit, because I'm sure there would be a lot of controversy watching young girls compete in this area.

  2. Thanks Lucy, you have mentioned some very interesting and truthful points. Yes i think the videos do show people that its not all about women dancing for men in a sleezy nightclub, it is hard work and i can honestly say it has transformed my body strength. I watch the videos and instantly want to learn how to do another move.
I think that you are right it is an art form however i also think that gymnastics and figure skating is however because they are now an recognised Olympic sport and it is competative its classed as a sport. This is why i think that people will find it hard to see it as a sport because it hasn't had its chance.
I understand that it has a history of being a degrading thing to do, but do you not think that if it was open for younger people and just the public in general to see how its changed and that it is performed differently that it would become acceptable? Do you think that this could then faze out pole dancing in mens clubs because it would be seen as a sport rather than something sleezy?
I find it hard as a Pole instructor because i know what takes part in my classes and its no at all about sex or sexy moves as such its learning spins and strength tricks, so when people say that its wrong i dont understand as i think it is qymnastics on a vertical pole.
If you were to see it in the Olympics what would you expect it to be, criteria, clothing ect?

  3. wow!! I have never seen a male do pole dancing so that was interesting. His video was interesting but very boring I kept skipping through it as it was mainly the same moves. Though I liked that it was purely about strengh and not sex.
Now the second video was amazing!!! It was not sleezy. Watching that made me want to take up pole dancing right away!! The way they move on the pole is incredible. Its like the pole is a part of them. The women are so strong their bodies are so toned. From watching this video I see that there are different styles of pole dancing this one is more of gymnastics on a vertical pole. I'm not sure how well lessons in younger students would go down due to the stigma attached to pole dancing. But I can certainly see it at the olympics but with maybe a different name e.g. Vertical Pole Gymnastics( and with a little more clothes). I also don't think it would ever faze out of strip clubs due to how much money that indrustry is worth.
    hope this helps :)

  4. I agree with you, i think that the female video is a prime example of how much strength is required for pole dancing. I think that calling it vertical pole gymnastics would also go down well with the general public. Maybe not bra and knickers but short if they wore what the olympic sprinters wore it would be acceptable.
I dont think that it would faze itout of gentlemens clubs as its been mentioned recently that their are so many new clubs being opened that they have had to change the laws on them!!!
I think that it would be a good thing to have this as a new event, i think that it would be great for viewers and it would give younger girls a chance to become successful in the sport they like to do xx
