Ok, so a little conversation is stewing about the use of internet sources for our academic pieces. I have used the internet to get hold of all of my sources as time to go to the library is difficult and I’m not the biggest fan of buying a paper full of words!
Even though I have used the internet I have looked for information from Google, Newspapers and the BBC website, therefore I feel that I have researched well as I have used websites that are existent.
By using the internet I have been able to look at papers and interviews that are months old and therefore I can still access them, what’s to say that buying a paper would have anything to do with my subject on that present day?
What does everyone think about this topic of conversation, do you think that it’s perfectly fine to use just the internet? Or do you think it’s essential to use other sources? Why?
I really look forward to what you all have to say
Abbi xx

Hey Abbi,
ReplyDeleteYou bring forward an interesting topic. From my point of view I think the internet is a wonderful asset and that we should get what we can from it. Since I am in Estonia, it is extremely hard to get hold of any information in English so the internet is really all I have.
I can understand that it can be interesting to delve into books and newspapers somtimes, to actually hold the evidence in your hands, but personally I am struggling to get through this course with my workload as it is, so any extra excursions to libraries (espescially estonian ones)are not exactly helpful.
I totally agree with you as the internet has everything. I think that it’s a little unfair to say that work could not be potentially great because the only resources that have been used have been accessed through the internet. I kind of think it would be slightly patronising to say that research can not be only from the web when we are doing our work and posting our work via the internet, we are communicating via the internet, most people on a daily basis use the internet as a daily resource whether its internet banking, shopping online or just on facebook.
ReplyDeleteI also agree about accessing the internet when you are abroad. I mentioned to Danielle that people in a foreign country and people that can’t find extra time to visit the library will need the internet and have no choice but to use the internet alone. I don’t understand why using a quote from a book will make my work more interesting.
I actually wrote those questions to you beacause I believe that using the internet is the best resource. I did read Melissa's comment's and didn't agree that you needed to get resources from books. I cant't see how it would make your work better?
ReplyDeleteAs for me being in Oz and others not in an english speaking country it is very difficult to get other resources. Also it is very hard and a long process to search for information. When it can be much quicker to use the internet and get information from newspapers etc. In many ocassions the information is the same. Like the newspapers, you have access to news from years back by having the internet.
Who has time to work to a degree and look through their collection of newspapers?
Abbi I am in complete agreement with you!
ReplyDeleteFollowing our conversation on the phone, being on a course such as this we are professional individuals and don't occupy such a luxury as a 9-5 job with mid week days off!
The internet is a reliable source that holds backdated information which is accessible at any hour of any day (dependent on your provider!).
For me researching cheerleading in the states, I can't get involved in live chats in a book in the library?!?
Not only that, it was mentioned in our induction that many of the students completing BAPP are working abroad and on cruises etc, where do you access a library with relevant information on a cruise?!?
THE INTERNET ROCKS!!!
Rae over and out!! x
Yay, so glad you wonderful ladies back me up as I am slightly worried that my marks would suffer just because I didn’t get myself to a library!!
ReplyDeleteDanielle, so glad you brought this conversation up as I think it’s important for people to know that it’s not essential to use books. I would defiantly like to know who collects newspapers!!
Rae- Precisely, we are to use what we can get hold of as we are doing this degree part-time to accommodate our busy lifestyles.
So I will continue to use what resources I have, in the time I have it, to the best of my ability!!
hi abbi,
ReplyDeleteI do agree with you but from putting my academic piece together using the Harvard reference I found out from other university goers that you can reference from the net but you should be using a wide range of resources, like books, government reports, leaflets etc as well as the net to support the topic you are talking about. The only thing with the internet is that anyone can publish any opinion or made up fact, so make sure you get your quotes etc from respected websites like 'The Guardian Archives'.
But I agree with you all that it’s not that simple to start finding information through thousands of hard resources espeacially when the internet filters for you etc.
Laura
Have to agree with you ladies, technology has moved on and the internet is such a wonderful resource that is easily assessable to us. To add to this with the use of search engines today, we are able to source exactly what we are looking for at the click of a button.
ReplyDeleteDanielle brought up a very good point. The internet also gives you access to news from years back so therefore using a newspaper is no different.
Im sure there are some cynics that would even question our use of blogs on a university course, asking us where our pens, papers and books have gone. They are obviously stuck in the past.
I remember my dad finding out I had to set up a blog for my first task of the course, im sure he thought it was just an excuse for me to be on the internet!.Little did he know that with blogging, I am able to receive and give constructive comments. All comments I have taken on board but not all I have used. The comments I have used have helped improve my work. If I was on my own writing the essays this wouldn't have been the case. I have also been able to learn so much about the way I work and how other people work too. This starts another debate and sorry for moving to a slightly different area.
Abbi, I am sure the fact you have only used the internet to source your literature is in no way going to affect your graded. Your work looks brilliant and your comments are always valid and helpful.
Thankyou ladies for your kind support. I have looked at books but only came across ones that were irrelevent to my piece so i am going to have to stick with what i can get my hands on as i am now finalsing work from Sydney.
ReplyDeleteDoes anybody know about this questionnaire that we have to do? I have been on the oasis plus site and i cant find it?
Hey abbi,
ReplyDeleteit was sent in an attachment on an email. I can email it to you if you like?
Danielle
using other sources is good not just the internet alone.
ReplyDeletesometimes the internet does give wrong information or should i say false information which does appear non helpful at all.
well i used to be a victim of just using the internet alone which didnt help me at all in producing fantastic piece of typographic work.
using the library or sources around you helps in fact even TV programs or newspapers helps a a lot. it takes you away from the internet and gives you a broader knowledge about things around you.
Yes Please Danielle xx
ReplyDeleteI understand that it does broaden the mind, but sometimes you have to work with what you have got, and if that means the internet alone then that’s what it will be. For those girls who don’t live in English countries and have access to libraries or newspapers I think its fine, I don’t see how that should determine the level of potential of your work.
ReplyDeleteI don’t understand why it would be frowned upon when the main way of contact and even this course is using the internet.
Abbi what is your email? Just read that you are in Sydney!! I'm in melbourne. Shame we could'nt have met up.
ReplyDeleteDanielle
its abbiwilliams@hotmail.com Yeah what a shame. Had a great xmas here did you? Deciding what to do for new year, might watch the fireworks from the bridge again!!!
ReplyDeleteThat would be good if you could email me that file x
Hi
ReplyDeleteI have just read the debate! I was just about to start Harvard referencing and spoke to my friends how have done normal degrees about it. They stated that you are expected to use a number of resources.
I feel this should not be a neccessity and agree with you that technology has moved on. Why should i have to go to the library to find something in a book that is easier found on the internet? I read but what is the difference between reading the same piece of information in a book compared to a computer screen?
I am currently in Dubai where library resources are limited, and will be in places where there is no easy access to books coem the new year. Without the internet i would not have been able to do this course or continue with it.
Abbi your comment; '...I will continue to use what resources I have, in the time I have it, to the best of my ability!!'
This is exactly how i feel! The internet has evolved and subsequently so should respect for it.
i agree with laura and using a wide range of sources is beneficial, however internet can offer false information yet books in libraries can be out of date, I however had neither available which has made my academic weak, which I was aware of, so lots of work for me. I've not had internet since going on tour, so i apologise for lack of comments they're on the way!
ReplyDeletei will still stand and say we all should use a wider range of resources, not all informations are out of date though. i just know that sometimes internet gives false information as i have been a victim of it.
ReplyDeleteeven in design its common and its a rule that you have to use a wider range of resources. just imagine yourself taggenting or carried away designing something of which is out their and your inspiration came from the internet i would definitely say its copyright and you could end up straight up in jail
I understand that and I’m sure everyone else does, but like people have said you use what you have access to and if you have a deadline it’s what you can use in the time you have. So if it’s the internet then so be it. I do think that using other sources is beneficial and I know that things accessed from the internet don’t always mean it is true. Who is to say that everything you read on the news or in a paper, leaflet or book is true either??
ReplyDeleteI have used online newspapers as a source so does that mean that it’s not good enough because I should have the actual paper in front of me? What difference does it make if it’s online to having it in my hands?
If something is referenced properly it can’t be copyright.
well yeah you pretty right yourself, well what can we say when we have only on resources to rely one, especially now that am actually stuck just using the internet as my near by library is closed.
ReplyDeleteAbbie for some reason is it possible to make a little announcement on the behalf of me for people to make comments on my work as i need a little nudge and crit and comments to build up my writings style.
i did write and announced it but nothing has changed.
Thanks
I would have but i ended up commenting on all the people that got their work up early becase i was going on holiday by the time i had commented i wrote over 4,000 words and had to come to the point where i stopped as i was writing on everyones blog instead of doing my work. I will have a look now but im afraid it will be late for the deadline.
